It appears Alpaca’s GM Ben Cook has had enough of his team’s subpar play as of late.  As a result, bold moves were made as two trades came down over the weekend involving the Aviators and Worgs:

To Alpacas: Christian Ehrhoff (D) Manny Malholtra (C LW RW) 5th round pick (year 3)
To Aviators: Alex Goglioski (D) Cam Barker (D) 4th round pick (year 3)

To Alpacas: Daniel Sedin (D) Bombers 1st round pick (year 3)
To Worgs: Ilya Kovalchuk (LW) Marcus Johansson (prospect forward) 1st & 2nd round picks (year 3)

When asked for comment on the two deals, Cook had the following to say:

“We believe the trades are fair for all teams involved.  We gained 3 solid pro players in their prime signed to multi-year contracts at excellent market value.  We gave up some youth/picks, but in this league, you have to give up something good to get something good in return!  At the end of the day, we still have four year 3 draft picks including a 1st round pick.  We will be ok.”

The trade does not bode well for centre Mat Stajan who has seen his ice time decline over the last few weeks.  Stajan who was centering the 2nd line had been pushed down to the 3rd line in favour of recent UFA acquisition Brad Richards.  Stajan while 4th in Alpaca scoring is at a team worst -16.  With Manny Malhotra expected to slot into the 3rd line centre role, it appears Stajan’s future with the Alpacas is finished.

Cook had the following to say:

“Yes, it is true -    Mat Stajan will be    WAIVED.  Matty has been a good player for us, but he doesn’t quite fit with the new direction this team has to take; that direction being stronger defensive play.  We have spoken to him and he has agreed that he will report to the farm if no team picks him up.  We really believe Matty belongs at the pro level in some capacity and feel he would be an excellent rental type player for any team heading into the playoffs.”
